Personally, while student athletes are in high school, I
feel like it should be acceptable for boys and girls to play on the same team
if there is not a separate team for one of them. For example, most high schools
only have a girl’s volleyball team, so it should be okay for a boy to play on
the team.
It is a bit ridiculous that people would let a girl play
line backer on a football team. Which depending on how you look at it can be
promoted as teaching males to hit females. But, when a young boy wants to play
field hockey or volleyball they get kicked off the team.
I feel as though people want to fight of women’s rights to
have more opportunities than males instead of equality for all. To me, Title IX
was about giving women the same opportunities as men. Not trying to give women
more opportunities.
It is sad that a young boy on a field hockey team gets
kicked of for being too good. What did you expect? He was playing with high
schoolers. But, ask yourself this. If a female football player led the league
in tackles, would she too get kicked off the team? I personally don’t think so,
in fact, I feel like people would praise the female for breaking barriers.
I understand when student athletes move to higher levels of
their sport such as college and professional stages. It would be better for
teams to be all female or all male for entertainment and safety reasons. But,
in high school and lower levels, I feel like it should be acceptable for males
and females to be on the same team. Many students can’t help the fact that
their school doesn’t offer the sport that they love.
I totally agree with you on boys can play on girl’s teams. The point you made that Title IX was about to give women same opportunities as men, but not trying to give women more opportunities than men. People always see Billie Jean King and Candace Parker fight for women because there are disparities to women, but they ignore that in some places men are treated unfairly. For example, the high school boy was banned for playing on the volleyball team for being too strong. The past weekend was NBA All-Star weekend, and the celebrity game was held on Friday. One moment that was widespread on social media pages was an 11-year-old girl Mo’ne Davis, who played in little league basketball with boys, crossed over Kevin Hart (not big, but definitely bigger than Mo’ne) and scored a lay-up for her team. In my opinion, I agree with you that Mo’ne will not be banned for being too good to play on the celebrity game in the future.

I couldn’t agree more with this whole entry. From the articles we read, it talked about males being kicked from female teams. Previously in the week we discussed women joining male’s teams. The class discussions brought points that females should be given the exact opportunities as men. I couldn’t agree more! When this discussion came up about males on females teams, students seemed to be more hesitant about the responses .Why is it that when females make movements in other sports it’s considered good, but when males do this, it is frowned upon? Title IX is for equality for men and women right? If males want to join a female’s team they should be allowed, just as if it was a female joining a male’s team. I find it funny how when the tables are turned, people in our society make the same arguments as the opposition would. Males should be able to play for women’s sports and females should be able to play for men’s sports. Both sides should just accept these rules and stop fighting them. All the fighting does is contradict the points they are making in the first place!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you. I don’t think it should matter if you are a boy or girl when it comes to playing sports in high school, and I agree that when you get to college or higher then there needs to be all some sex teams. When I was in middle school I played for a club soccer team and we had girls on our team, and I recently coached a youth soccer team where about half of the team was girls. Some of our best players were girls and with out the girls on the team there would not have been a team. Also I am a member of the BGSU Equestrian team the team is made up of about 40 girls and I am the only guy. When we have are competitions they don’t have special classes just for the guys we are all mixed together and I don’t feel like there is any advantages or disadvantages on being a guy going against mostly all girls. Summing this up is that some sports it matters if you have the opposite sex on the team but I don’t think that these differences are recognizable until people are more advanced in there physical abilities. But in sports that don’t require a lot of physical ability I don’t think there are any differences if you’re a male or female.

ReplyDeleteI agree with this post as I do think that men and women should be aloud to play opposite sex sports. I think that its a good thing for athletes to want to play a sport no matter what sex the sport is mostly. In class we talked about a male wanting to playing on a women's volleyball team. I can see why people got upset over this and didn't want him to play. Men are usually taller and a lot stronger then women so I can understand why some people don't really agree with men playing on women's teams. In my opinion I would want to play against a team that has a male athlete. I think it makes the female athlete work ten times as hard and want to win ten times more.

I'm sorry but after reading your post I would have to disagree strongly with this. First off I do believe that at a young age, probably around 5-10 years old, it is okay for boys and girls to play on the same sports teams. But anything over the age of 10 years old I feel should be separated. I understand that some people are upset that some schools only have sports specifically for one gender like volleyball, which is primarily a girls sport, but that does not make it okay for a boy to be able to play. Boys and girls are built completely differently, especially since you mention a boy playing on a girls volleyball team in high school. What I mean by boys being built differently would be how boys are generally bigger and stronger than girls. Yes, some girls certainly are more athletic than some boys but generally speaking I think letting a boy play on an all girls volleyball team would be potentially disastrous. If one boy joins the girls team and likes it then he's probably going to tell his buddies to come out and try and play on the team, and this is where things could go south quick because what if it got out of hand and all of the girls ended up sitting the bench because of the over population of males on the team. Overall I'm just saying this could be a very sticky situation. I think boys and girls should remain separated when talking about athletics.
