Girls Tackling Football Across the Country
I’m all about girls breaking barriers, showing guys that we
can do pretty much anything they can do. But, when it comes to football, I feel
like girls should know their place.
In high school, I’m absolutely routing for girls to play “ALL”
sports. I feel like it is a great confidence builder for females. Also, it shows
guys that girls can beat them at what they feel is a man’s sport. But, it’s
high school. Many high schools don’t even have varsity try-outs because they don’t
have enough players who want to play. So, it is easier for girls to play and
succeed at that level.
As far as college and beyond, I simply don’t see girls
succeeding in football. The guys are simply too strong and quick. Just think
about a girl trying to compete in a conference such as the SEC. Every school
would crush them, especially when conference play rolls around.
And I’m not even going to get into the NFL that simply won’t
happen.
Personally, if I were a mother, I would absolutely not allow
my daughter to play football. I feel like it is just too dangerous. I don’t
even know if I would allow my son to play football.
I also feel like the guy players would feel the need to give
extra protection to the females. It would take away the physicality of the
game. Everything would be taken personal. And it would put guys in an awkward position,
meaning most guys don’t want to hit a girl, and most guys don’t want to lose to
a girl.
Girls playing football probably won’t go pass high school.
Kia,
ReplyDeleteThis is a topic we will be discussing in Tuesday's class and I will be sharing about examples of girls playing in both High School and College. It may not change your mind about how successful girls or women can be. But hopefully it helps you to see that more than a handful of girls are interested in playing! I do appreciate your statement that you might not want to encourage your sons to play due to the dangers. I think more parents are beginning to agree with that.

ReplyDeleteI personally would like my daughter play football. If I was interested in playing a sport as a kid and wanted to try it I got to. My parents let me try anything I wanted when it came to sports. As I kid I really wasn't interested in football but I was in baseball. I got to play baseball with the boys and enjoyed it a lot. If my daughter was that passionate about playing football, I would definitely let her. I don't want her to think that just because she is a girl she wont be aloud to do the things she wants to do. I think that Kia did make a good point about women playing in college. Men are faster and stronger as they go onto the college level. But, I also think women can be strong and fast to. I think the female will have to work a lot harder then the men do but I think it is possible for a women to play football on the college level.

I agree with you on the aspect of girls playing collegiate football. This is, in no means, a bash on women and what they are capable of accomplishing. The fact of the matter is, males start preparing to play these sports at a younger age. They start physical contact sports earlier, and they are exposed to weight lifting earlier in life as well. Being a college athlete, I am aware of the capabilities it takes to play at the next level. When you reach college it’s the best of the best regardless of what division you play in. The players are faster, stronger, and more physical than player’s high school. Does this mean that women are not capable? Not at all. It just means that as a society, we need to take action to make women more capable, by giving them the tools at an earlier age. If we can give them these tools, they will be more likely to have success at the next level in football if football is the route in which they choose to take.
ReplyDeleteI personally would not want my daughter playing football. I also agree with you in that I do not think I would want my son to play football. I am all about "Girl Power" and supporting female sports. I am a fan of female sports and in high school I spend a lot of time watching women’s sports for example basketball, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. I thought these sports were entertaining to watch because of the equal competitiveness. I thought these games were focused on who was the better team. I think that if my football team would’ve had a female on the team it would have created a distraction. I feel that each game would’ve been more focused on the female’s participation on the team then would be focused on the actual game. I also wouldn’t let my son or daughter play football for the risk of injury. I have never played competitive football in my life; I played soccer mainly so I plan on teaching my kids to love the game of soccer also. Soccer is just as physical and takes just as much skill if not more, but I think there is much less of injury because there are not as many hard collisions. There are many sports that females can do if they want to do something physical. They can play basketball, soccer, volleyball, and even wrestling.
