When it comes to transsexuals playing in sports I disagree
with it. For the simple fact, it won’t be fair to competitors all the way
around. Renee Richards changed into a girl and continued to still play tennis.
Many on her competitors would forfeit competition because they were either
uncomfortable with it or they felt like it was an unfair advantage.
When it is a male changing to a female they would
already have the muscle power and speed to be an immediate game changer. So,
from that stand point, females who have been training their whole life will be
at an unfair advantage even if someone such as Richards waited two years to
compete. Now, granted Richards did lose competitions late in her career, but I
feel as though that is mostly because of old age more than it being an even
level playing field.
When it is a female changing to a male, I feel they wouldn’t
have a disadvantage to the competitors and wouldn’t help their team as much. As
a student previously said in class, men have been training their whole life
building muscle and speed, plus they naturally grow into stronger individuals.
I feel the female changing into a male and playing on a male team would more
gain media attention for the wrong reasons, than for what the team is trying to
accomplish in their respected sports.
Overall, I don’t see how a transsexual playing on a sport
team would end up being a fair to the team or individual.
It is interesting that when a girl who is really good in her sport wants to play on a men’s team, her getting rejected will cause problems related to gender inequality issues, but on the other hand, a guy wanting to play with girls is being unfair because he is too strong. If girls have the right to play with/against boys, then boys should also have the right to play with/against girls. Transsexuals in sports are mostly males to females, and it would be considered unfair because they have the power when they were once men and carry the power over the transition. It is similar to the articles we have read before about a high school boy who was on the volleyball team and another boy on the field hockey team facing hard times because they were considered too good or too strong. In my opinion, it is fair competition if the transsexual player has been qualified by the event’s organizers.

I do not believe that it is fair for transsexuals to compete in sports under the circumstances they are given. Even though there are certain qualifications for them to play, such as being two years into their hormone therapy, I still do not think that they are on even playing grounds with the rest of the sex that they are transitioning to. Two years is not enough time. I do not think they should get to compete until they have reached at least five years of hormone therapy and even then I believe someone should have to make the decision if they are ready to compete and that it will be fair. Having one person making these decisions would ensure that the transsexual did not have an advantage over their oponent. Not giving him or her a chance to play would be unfair but it would also be unfair for them to have an advantage. I think lengthening the time that they need to be on hormone therapy is the only way to make it fair on both ends.

ReplyDeleteI believe their is a situation that needs to be addressed when it comes to transsexuals in sports. As far as men who change to the opposite sex, their is a big advantage. Men have been training their whole lives as men, with testosterone flowing through their body, and even develop man muscle and height. As for women who choose to become men they are at a disadvantage when playing male sports I believe. or at least physical competition. Even pumped with testosterone women have been living and competing in their female bodies their whole life, and are still competing in their female height. But what should these athletes do? If they cannot compete among the opposite sex within their new bodies, where can they compete?
ReplyDeleteShould we have a league of transsexuals? these are things we need to discuss.

I don't think it would be fair for a transexual to play against the opposite sex especially if it is a male changing to a female because of the physical traits that males have. Most of the time males are bigger faster and stronger then females, even after taking hormone pills that wont take away thing like height and body size and it may only slow the person down by a little. I only think it is unfair if the person changing has compeated in the sport there whole life and played at a high level, because you can't just have someone who was a male change to a female and assume there going to dominate at a sport because females are just as good at the sports then males. While in high school I played tennis against some of the girls team, and beat most of them but their top 2 players I'm not afraid to admit gave me a really hard time and beat me every once in awhile
ReplyDeleteI do think that is is wrong for transsexuals to compete against the opposite sex. As Kia mentioned, it would be an unfair advantage for males turning into females because of the strength. These "female" athletes would also be taking away spots from other female athletes who have worked all their life to compete. If a male turns into a female and is wanting to play a sport, I just don't think that is right. They are going to have more strength then most of the women they are competing against. This is giving them an advantage from the start, which is unfair to the rest of the female athletes. If a female were to be turning into a male I still think it is unfair for them to be competing in sports. I don't think they would have an advantage against other males but, it would be unfair in a way that the athlete is taking away spots. Males should stick to male sports and females should stick to female sports. This not giving it an unfair advantage to anyone and everyone has an equal opportunity to make the team or play the sport.
