What Gay Men Are Really Thinking in the Locker Room: Ellen Chlumecky

This article discusses the myth that people may believe that gay athletes are more or less prone to check out other athletes in the locker room. The author made a point of mentioning how all men check each other out no matter their sexual orientation. It is a natural action that all men do no matter the situation. Males compare themselves to others and how they compare to others. All men are all competitive, masculine drive, and are visual in nature.
The author made a point to say that homosexual men’s libidos are no more aroused than heterosexual. Anyone who thinks differently is ignorant and insecure. Men who are secure in themselves take it as a compliment when a gay man hits on him. The author discusses the reason men believe that gay men are ready to hit on them are the differences in sexual orientations comes down to values, beliefs, and maturity. The author gave some introspection on how certain males react. The males the author interviewed seemed to be secure in themselves and don’t seem to assume that just because a male is gay that he wants to hit on him.

I really loved this article. I have always believed that men who believe that just because a male is gay that he’s automatically checking out every single male straight or gay. It’s completely ignorant. Men who think that all gay men automatically just check them out are too into themselves for their own good. I love this article because it put people who are ignorant into their place.

  1. The idea of men believing gay males look at them to check them out is ignorant. However, when it comes to the locker room, I think it is another conversation. Men’s checking out girls on streets is normal; it would make some people feel uncomfortable, but others may not. When it comes to the locker room where everybody changes their clothes and mostly they are naked, I don’t believe that a male in a girl’s locker room will make girls comfortable and vice versa because it is common sense that males are into females, and when somebody is of the opposite sex and heterosexual, it sure will create some issues. I think it can be applied to gay males in men’s locker rooms. It is ignorant to think gay males look at men to check them out, but it will create feelings of awkwardness in the locker room.

  2. I think that males would feel uncomfortable having a gay guy in the locker room. Not because i would think the guy would be looking at me in particular but chances are that there is someone in the locker room that they would be into. I also don't think people want a gay man on there team because they wouldn't want all of the distraction that would come with it. Another thing that would be uncomfortable would be if the gay guy was into someone on the team, the effects that would carry over to the field. I think it could effect the trust that a team has with each other and would result in a uncontrollable team.

  3. I agree with Dalton on this one. I think that some males would feel uncomfortable having a gay guy in the locker room. I know I would feel a little bit uncomfortable changing in front of a girl who was gay. I do think that most straight males think that all gay men are "into them", which I do think is ignorant. I get that they may feel uncomfortable but they shouldn't be thinking that all gay men are looking at them in a productive way. It may take time for males to get used to having a gay teammate on the team. Everyone takes news differently and processes in a different way. The gay male athlete on the team should resect other teammates since everyone processes different things in different ways. The straight males on the team should be supportive of the gay teammate and appreciate that the gay athlete told his teammates something so private. Eventually I think the straight athletes shouldn't have a problem with the gay athlete in the locker room.

  4. I think that having a gay man in the locker room with the rest of the team should not be an issue. Just because they are gay it does not mean that they are attracted to you, in the same way that I like men does not mean that I am attracted every man. This is the same situation with a gay male in a locker room. The chances of him trying to get with one of his teammates is very slim. I have played with gay females before and it has never been an issue in the locker room or in between any of my teammates. I believe men have bigger issues with gay people and it needs to be addressed. Them acting like that shows that they are insecure and are ignorant.
