Many things were done and said that may have caused insult
to Lin. Such as the Saturday Night Live (SNL) skit and the ESPN analysis making
rude remarks. In class, we watched a skit on how they pretty much made fun of
Lin and it was okay but when a black joke was made it wasn’t. Now, we all know
that SNL is known to do over the top skits. It is all suppose to be fun and
games. A question was raised being did SNL take the skit to far?
Personally, I feel like it was just an ignorant joke. But,
to Asian fans, they found the skit to be very offensive; along with other
things that have been said.
Another problem that read was the fact that there was really
nobody to compare Lin to. Many may compare him to Yao Ming, but to me that’s
different because Ming was born out of the country and could barely speak English.
It is obviously wrong to stereotype players by how they
looked. I personally think that NBA players and coaches did not take Lin
seriously at first. Instead, they allowed him to gain a rhythm and confidence.
I also feel like Lin may have played with a little anger because of some of the
comments that were said about him.
Overall, I feel like as nation, we disrespected Lin and
acted as though we had no home training. I feel like it made the whole nation
look bad when few people made in sensitive remarks towards Lin. Instead of
focusing on the great thing that he accomplished, sadly, a lot of negativity
took the spotlight away.
I hope that the next time someone spectacular comes out of the blue and catches our attention, people will learn from Lin and handle the excitement better.
In regards to the SNL skit I think that it was totally inappropriate. I get that SNL makes fun of people that thats what SNL is all about but I think this was completely wrong. By the comedians making jokes about the Asian culture it offended a lot of people. If people are watching this at home on their television set then they think it is okay for them to make these sorts of remarks. I get that it was a joke toward Jeremy Lin but other people didn't see it in that way. Everyone has a different sense of humor and takes things in a certain way. I think that some of these jokes on the skit went a little overboard. I get that they were just trying to be funny but I don't think it is funny when they are offending a certain race and culture. Jeremy Lin already got enough stereotypes thrown at him when he entered in the NBA. I couldn't imagine how he felt when he saw this skit about himself making fun of his race and culture.

I totally agree with you that the SNL skit was to far. There were many joke during the skit that i got caught laughing but not because i thought they were funny but because they were things i never thought i would here said in public. The skit made the impression that the it was okay to be racist to asians but as soon as there was a Black joke it turned offensive. The media made it sound like Lin was straight from Asia when really he was born in California, went to Harvard and is probably the smartest person in the NBA. Lin was one of the best things to happen to the NBA because he was a star for a while and was asian so it pulled in a new demographic to tune into games, buy jerseys and get inspired.
ReplyDeleteJeremy Lin put on excellent performances during “Linsanity”, but he didn’t get the respect he deserved after “Linsanity”. I am not sure whether the coaches don’t play him as much because he is Asian American, but the media uses his race as a cause of his poor performance. I think it is okay to compare him with Yao Ming because they both gained tremendous attention from Asian fans. Also, I have to correct you here. Yao Ming barely spoke English when he first entered the NBA, but his English improved so that he could talk to anybody in English without a translator. In my opinion, it is okay to put criticism on Jeremy Lin’s performance based on his ability, but people should not make it related to his race. For example, similar to Jeremy Lin’s situation, Yao Ming was also an Asian player, and played well but still faced stereotypes based on his race. We should evaluate a player based on his/her ability because a player is more than his/her race.

I also think that only of the reasons Lin blew up so largely was because it was something we had not really seen before. We had no one to compare him to. There are not many Asians who play basketball and when we saw Lin and the talent he had, it was so out of the ordinary that it was made into a big deal. I do not think that everything done against Lin was necessarily racist, but more of just not knowing what to do with him. Lin was looked at differently, yes because of his race, but it did not have to do with being Asian. I believe it was just because it was a rare thing to see. It was something that has not yet been explored, and like every new thing, it took some getting used to.
